November 2007: Elephant Parade 2007

After the success of the inaugural Elephant Parade in 2006, we ran the competition again in 2007. This year we received 170 entries, about double the number of 2006, and once again, the artists have exceeded our expectations with the creativity of their fun and funky designs.

First prize winner: Thein Sine with "Dream Trees".

This outstanding work has been given an extra dimension by the artist, as he has carved around the branches and twigs of the trees covering his elephant, giving a tactile quality to the sculpture. Thein Sine says, "If I had more time, I would have carved deeper."

Second prize winner: Ye Aung Myat with "Hi Boss"

You cannot help but smile in viewing Ye Aung Myat's homage to the US dollar. Cynically titled "Hi Boss", the superb depiction of the banknotes makes us wonder whether this young artist has a future (or a past) in another field...

Third prize winner: Dawei Tu Tu with "Free Elephant"

Dawei Tu Tu gives us the King of Elephants, free to roam the forest, sovereign in his realm. The polished elegance of this work, incorporating different representations of freedom, catches the eye in a thought-provoking way.
